Building Maintenance


The Public Works Department’s Building Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair, replacement and upkeep of all of the City of New London’s buildings and faculties, as well as street lights and traffic lights. This includes all schools and City-owned buildings, including: City Hall, Police Station, Stanton Building and the Martin Center.

In all, there are 31 buildings. They consist of:

14 City buildings;
3 Fire facilities;
3 Police facilities;
10 school facilities.

There is approximately 1 million square feet within these buildings to maintain, as well as the items within them. We also are responsible for:
33 traffic intersections; and
2,300 streetlights within City limits

The Building Division is responsible for a wide-variety of structures, which includes the maintenance for a 1700’s town mill, to the state-of-the-art new “Magnet” schools. Also included is the new “high tech.” Police Communications area, which was remodeled by our staff in 2007. We are also responsible for the uncommon items such as the benches at the Waterfront Park, bus shelters, floating docks, dug outs, concession stands and the replacement of American flags on City properties.

The Building Maintenance division workload varies greatly, from working on computer lines to clearing clogged drains, to installing a scoreboard, or repairing a dock at the Waterfront Park. The Building Maintenance staff is also responsible for locks, glass, floor tile, sheetrock, painting, wiring, phone lines, light plumbing, roofing, making cabinets, traffic lights, ceilings, and streetlights.

Mechanical Maintenance

The Mechanical Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all of the the City’s fleet of vehicles and other motorized equipment. This equipment ranges from lawnmowers to trailer trucks, police cars, fire vehicles, weed eaters, and generator sets such that a broad range of skills are required to insure priority equipment is available for emergency service. A significant amount of work from service to major overhauls is performed by staff although some work is specialized and must be outsourced. For this work staff makes necessary arrangements and inspects completed work for compliance with standards.
