City, ShopRite, Gemma E. Moran Food Center hosting Emergency Food Drive Friday, Nov. 7; virtual donation option available

NEW LONDON – The City of New London will host an emergency food drive in collaboration with the local ShopRite Supermarket at 351 North Frontage Road, and the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, on Friday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those wishing to donate items but unable to get to ShopRite on Friday can bring food items to the New London Community and Recreation Center or to City Hall, on the first floor.

Food can be donated online by making a purchase through the Virtual Food Drive

Checks can be mailed to: Gemma E. Moran, United Way/Labor Food Center, 374 Broad St., New London, or dropped off at Shop Rite on Friday, Nov. 7, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Items most needed include shelf-stable microwaveable meals (oatmeal, ramen, and mac & cheese cups), peanut butter, pasta and sauce, cereal, mac & cheese, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soup, rice, dry beans, and shelf-stable milk.

“This initiative is essential to address the immediate critical needs of our community, considering recent challenges that include the federal government shutdown, cuts to the SNAP program, and the economic instability that many residents are currently facing,” said Mayor Michael Passero. “The urgent need for food assistance in Southeastern Connecticut cannot be ignored; it is a critical priority that demands our attention. Our most vulnerable populations, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, children, hard-to-reach groups, and those forced to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table, are exposed and in need of immediate support. We must stand together to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.”

Contributions are being sought from residents, businesses, and charitable organizations who wish to help ensure that no New London resident is left without a meal or the comfort of knowing their community cares. Every dollar or food item donated will stay right here in New London, to provide food and essential support to fellow residents and families who need it most.
